Check out Edward Rice's biography of Richard Burton. Burton wasn't just a translator, he was an explorer, spy, soldier on various opposing sides during colonial wars among many other things.
He was good friends with Rudyard Kipling, who wanted to write a book about him, but didn't because he didn't think anyone would believe it.

>Writers are literally the most boring people in existence.
Someone's never heard of Richard Burton. You see that scar on his face on the cover? He got that from a spear to the face while fighting tribes in Africa. Rudyard Kipling wanted to write a book about Burton's life, but didn't because 'no one would believe it.'

Most people only know of Burton from his translation of Arabian Nights, but he was all over the place, from Mecca to India to China to Somalia. He explored every corner of the East during the 19th century. This biography is a really entertaining read. He was also good friends with Rudyard Kipling and was an inspiration to him.

I didn't know very much about Richard Burton beyond that his translation of the Thousand and One Nights is the most famous.
Recently, I went to a book shop and saw pic-related lying on a table and picked it up. I'd no idea Richard Burton was such an incredibly interesting character. This guy has some of the greatest tales of exploration of the 19th century. Apparently he was well acquainted with Rudyard Kipling, and Kipling wanted to write a novelization of his life, but felt he couldn't because 'no one would believe it.'
Anyone else read this or other books about Burton?
Recommend me some more kino about explorers and adventurers.

Not OP, but do you have something to add to the discussion? Please stay out of it if all you're going to do is whine and expose how not fully educated you are.

In addition to the OP's picture, I'll add the biography of an early jew-wise British explorer and spy who spoke 29 languages, snuck into Mecca as an infidel, and discovered the source if the Nile River, named Richard Francis Burton by Edward Rice. I contend that no one has lived a more interesting life than this man.
