Writing Technique Thread

When you write your first draft how much do you save? I say this because I don't feel my base level of writing skill is worthy of book quality, and no amount of post-editing is going to help that. Stephen King said the final draft is the first minus ten percent, I'm just curious as to how much writing he does before going over his book line by line.
