This. It's very important to establish a good rapport with your roommate ASAP. Living with someone you don't really like makes your home, which is supposed to be a comfy safe space to where you can retreat from the world, feel like a prison. For the final three years of uni I lived with a childhood friend whom I had really drifted apart from. His standards of cleanliness were drastically lower than mine, meaning that I had to clean up after him all the time if I wanted to feel comfortable in communal spaces like the kitchen or bathroom. By the end of my time there he made my skin crawl and I genuinely hated him.

I never lived 1-on-1 with a female roommate, but with a senior and her boyfriend and some of my own friends. It's nice to have a woman around. Not because they'll serve as a maid or anything like that (though my roommate often did communal cleaning), but because a female presence is nice. It didn't hurt that she was a 10/10 blonde volleyball player with an S-tier body. While she was unspeakably sexy, and even hung out with me in the living room while she was wearing a bikini for suntanning on a few occasions, I always thought of her as something of an older sister. She was quite successful for her age (owned her own business at 24, could have easily lived comfortably off it even without getting a degree) and was already planning on getting an advanced degree. I admired her quite a lot. I'm still grateful for that experience. She really improved my opinion of women in general.
