“All clear, there’s no one here.”

“There is someone here, look.”

The seconds ticked by, but they felt like hours. Anne could feel herself shaking uncontrollably. The stench of fear was overpowering. Finally Anne heard the crunch as the door to the basement was broken and a torchlight shown in her face.

“HALT! HANDS U-”

Acting on instinct, Peter sprung from the mattress and attempted to punch the approaching figure square in the face but missed. He had never been much of a fighter. His reward was a pistol being brought down on his face, it didn’t miss. The blow knocked Peter back, as he turned, Anne felt something spray on her face. It took her only a fraction of a second to realize what it was. Peel reels, grabbing his nose, Anne could already see the blood seeping through his fingers.

The German raised his pistol to Peter and Anne felt her heart sink.

“Stop!”

Another two Germans had slipped into the room during the commotion. One wore a grey uniform and cap. On his sleeve Anne, could see the a black diamond with “SD” written on it. He was Gestapo.

“No killing this one, he’s not worth the paperwork.”

His subordinate was incredulous, “Herr Silberbauer, this stinking Jew dared to strike a German officer. Th-“

“I don’t care if he knocked your teeth out! We’ve killed enough people tonight, I already have a mountain of paperwork to fill out, don’t make me fill out any more.”

“Yes sir”, the German’s voice could barely contain his thinly veiled disappointment, “am I allowed to hit this Jew at least?”

Silberbauer paused for a brief moment, “You may.”

Peter was immediately struck in the face again, he nearly collapsed in pain. The German then grabbed him and shoved him back towards Anne, “get up, both of you!”

Anne had trouble simply sitting up, the baby was so heavy. Peter had to help. Anne grabbed her blanket and vainly tried to hide her massive belly under it, as if she were trying to shield the baby.
