1. The Bible isn't western.
2. I'm sorry not everything is right under your nose anon.
3. To be fair, rather than Sumerian, Bronze age. Go look into the Bronze age. Your answers are there. Someone even made picrel to help.

Is this the oldest period one can learn from? Or perhaps one should study physics or biology first? Obviously this an extreme goal that most likely nobody can reach but it's also really fun and interesting to attempt.

You started with the ancients and learned to read and write in cuneiform before starting with the Greeks, right?

I'm looking for history books that I would enjoy, if I enjoy stuff like Tomb Raider, Uncharted, etc.
To be clear, I am NOT looking for an adventure story. I'm looking for a book that will help me learn history. I mention those series because they all have a similar, I guess bronze-golden age era? Not sure.

My history knowledge is extremely confused, and lacking. Everytime I try to read history or look things up, it's just overwhelming information of names, events, places, and dates that I can't absorb and just get more confused.

I've seen the chart for the bronze age in >>18507669 (pic rel)
Is this really the best place it sounds like I should start? Not sure if that's what I'm looking for?
I was considering buying the vol 1 ancient near east (maybe the background book at the bottom is a better option first though?

Are these books I should read front to back, word for word?

Everyone is saying "Start with the Greeks". Why not "Start with the Bronze Age"? Does it have to do with the fact that theres not evidence to back up the history and literature? Or is it just not interesting? if not, why then?

Also any criticisms about pic related?
I bought the oxford history of egypt for later reading but I'm also interested in the other periods/cultures in this, don't know where to find the central anthologies though, is it worth it?

I'm attempting to read the Bible cover to cover and I just made it to about halfway through, so it seems I'm actually going to do it this time.
What should I read after the Bible to expand my knowledge of it? I found pic related on this board but I'm wondering what else is out there. I've already read the Epic of Gilgamesh.

Been working through this on and off through August. I really enjoyed Gilgamesh, the Baal cycle and Aquat, and a lot of the poetry from Egypt was good. AMA.

Ugaritic Narrative Poetry (available on libgen) has all the contents of Stories From Ancient Canaan and a few more shorter text, though none really interesting and I prefer the format and context given in Stories From Ancient Canaan. Basically both these collection have translations of the Baal Cycle, and the others Kirta and Aquat. Yahweh and the gods and goddesses of Canaan also seems highly rated.

The topic is a lot of fun, Egypt is, if not more interesting than the Greeks in certain fashions. They were much better architects and there gods seem to be "purer" and less human. This list helped alot, but it is kind of redundant and some of the books are literally the same content with slight variations in selections and I thought the choice in history text (Oxford) was poor. Egyptian Mythology is pretty kino though, learned a lot from that book. Writings was good but I think there is a larger anthology called Ancient Egyptian Literature on libgen which seems to be the best (bout 800 pages). Though if you what to learn more about the secrets of Egypt you'll have to learn elsewhere but it was a good introduction.
