> Never in all my life has 100 little pages made me contemplate suicide...violent suicide. i had to finish it. i had no choice (yay college!). every page was literally painful.
> Proving yet again that doing a concept first will get you immortalized, while doing it WELL will make you an unknown and forgotten writer at best, I also learned that in Conrad's time, people could drone on and on with metaphors and it wasn't considered cliched, but "art." I blame this book and others like it for some of the most painful literature created by students and professional writers alike.

O-okay ;_;

This book was amazing. Another dark and edgy book nonetheless, but how it portrayed it was amazing.

The pretty racist racism of the book was interesting too.

Hey /lit/ I've been ambushed by deadly ENGLISH LANGUAGE and I'm slightly confused.

'if not'

Do I understand correctly that this expression can link both... uhh... not sure how to put this, does 'if not' go both ways when linking words, as in it can take on the meaning 'although not really as (good as)' - for example 'affordable, if not exactly cheap' - as well as actually emphasizing the quality - i.e. 'one of the major themes, if not the single most important one'?

Or did I get it wrong somewhere and there is no uncertainty? Particularly the latter expression, I would always assume it serves to emphasize that actually, this single theme just might be the most important one (as opposed to 'well it's a major theme but not really THE n.1 theme').

P.S. doing a short paper on civilization/image of the city in the Heart of Darkness, any tips except for the obvious imagery of a whited sepulchre inhabited by pretty much hollow men kept in check via fairly arbitrary means and being only a short way of succumbing to the hollowness?

Opinions on Joseph Conrad?
I didn't think it was possible for someone to write so amazingly in a language other than their first.

I'm going to read The Heart of Darkness and possibly the other "short fiction" stories in the copy I have if I feel like it (which include: Youth, Amy Foster, The Secret Sharer).

Has /lit/ read any of these? What do you think of them? Also, just curious, what was the last classic literature book you read?

Sup /lit/izens.

I'm worried that I'm losing my analytical ability, as I've spent my last 2 months doing fuck all besides sitting on my arse and drinking. As such, I want you to give me an essay question pertaining to Heart Of Darkness by Joseph Conrad - I've just finished reading it - and I will do my very best to answer it, and will post my answer here if you want to read it.

Disclaimer: I won't do your suggestion if it's retarded.
