>I'm writing a paper on possible different modalities of communication (like, besides small mouth noises), and I'm trying to use molluscoid communication as an example, since they're such cool creatures.

That's fascinating. Out of curiosity, have you put any research into plantae and fungi communication (such as in embrophyta or mycelium networks)? Currently particularly interested in applications of such knowledge for agricultural purposes so any tips would be deeply appreciated.

>It's all based on color. It's really crazy to watch in action.

The video you linked is mind-blowing. Perhaps my eyes deceive me but it looked like one of the squids was shimmering? I'm very keen on reading the literature you've provided in this thread (and would like to thank you for doing so). The mechanisms behind this iridescence (specifically the capacity for dynamic tuneable structural coloration - https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rspb.2012.1374)) lead to interesting possibilities within the context of synthetic biological applications.
