Shantaram. It's really good man, it's pretty huge but don't let that detract you. Thinking about it, I've got to re-read it.

If you give him Shantaram, you could possibly change his life. Just saying.

It's accessible, beautiful, and deals with simple, fundamental themes. Give it to him.

The first thing I noticed about Bombay, on that first day, was the smell of the different air. I could smell it before I saw or heard anything of India, even as I walked along the umbilical corridor that connected the plane to the airport. I was excited and delighted by it, in that first Bombay minute, escaped from prison and new to the wide world, but I didn't and couldn't recognize it. I know now that it's the sweet, sweating smell of hope, which is the opposite of hate; and it's the sour, stifled smell of greed, which is the opposite of love. It's the smell of gods, demons, empires, and civilizations in resurrection and decay. It's the blue skin-smell of the sea, no matter where you are in the Island City, and the blood-metal smell of machines. It smells of the stir and sleep and waste of sixty million animals, more than half of them humans and rats. It smell of heartbreak, and the struggle to live, and of the crucial failures and loves that produce our courage. It smells of ten thousand restaurants, five thousand temples, shrines, churches, and mosques, and of a hundred bazaars devoted exclusively to perfumes, spices, incense, and freshly cut flowers. Karla once called it the worst good smell in the world, and she was right, of course, in that way she had of being right about things. But whenever I return to Bombay, now, it's my first sense of the city — that smell, above all things — that welcomes me and tells me I've come home.

Hope you like it Op.

>I mean fuck it, even if it's not Fantasy I'll still take good books that make you look forward to sitting down with your book before bed and reading or make you want to read instead of playing videogames or watching TV. It's been a while since I've had a book like that.

and for this.
Read Anthony Kiedis's autobiography called Scar Tissue. I used to forgo lunch breaks at my work to go and read it in my car in the carpark.

Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts. The only massive book I've never wanted to end. I'd be 200 pages in and looking at the 700 pages to go and wishing it were a thousand more. Read this

Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test by Tom Wolfe. This is a rode trip. You don't read, you experience. You experience so much in this book, so much shit happens, so many different settings, you feel like you were one of the guys going along for the rider, well you are if you read it.

Wild: An Elemental Journey by JAY Griffiths. I love how Jay writes and she talks about really interesting subjects. The books about Jay and her journeys to native tribes, she goes to the amazon to do Ayahuasca, talks to the tribes and finds out how much christian missionaries have fucked them up. She goes to Australia, Antarctica etc, really good book. I've never seen it mentioned on lit, sadly.

Then there are some classics you can't go wrong with.
Slaughterhouse Five
To Kill A Mocking Bird
Animal Farm
I'm a big Adventures of Tom Sawyer fan.

Written by a dude while in prison based on real events about how he had previously escaped prison in Australia and ran away to India wherein he fell in love with a white chick, worked for the Indian mob, fought alongside the Taliban against the Rooskies, and ran an impromptu medical clinic in a slum in Mumbai.

Pic related last novel I read "Shantaram". A masterpiece in my opinion.
