There is not enough time. In order to achieve our ambitions, everything must be rationalized. Measured. Turned into schemes that can later be improved. Humans must learn to behave like machines, with the assistance of machines.

Posted this in the last thread just as it died, so I'm posting it again.
My brother really likes the Foundation series, Dune series and Red Mars series. Dense, technical sci-fi. I want to get him books from other authors. Any suggestions please?

This is a board about literature so lets just generally talk about literature.
Talk about a book you are reading, just read or are going to read.

I finished Infinite Jest. Was a tough book to start because of the non-linearity and setting. Didnt catch on to the date system he used for a while. Some of the chapters were engrossing, others were kind of boring. Overall I liked reading about the recovery house and all the addicts.
Hal reminded me of myself in highschool.
I would not have understood the ending if I hadnt read Aaron Swartz explanation. I thought the wraith thing was a hallucination and that the moving furniture had a rational explanation.

Next Im going to read House of Leaves because Im interested in how a book can be scary. Im expecting to be pleasantly surprised by a good writing style.

Im losing motivation in reading philosophy and im only on book 6 of the republic Does it get more fulfilling any time more soon? I dont feel as if i am benefitting much from it, sure there are some thought provoking statements about state and life scattered around here and there, and i also find Plato's theory about knowledge and Forms interesting, but there is so much boring shit i have to read in order to get to those relatively rare peaks. My question to you, as a philosophy novice, is if any of this becomes more interesting any time soon? I hear so much about people having their lives changed for the better by such and such authors or books, and i cant help but feel i am missing out by not trying.

Societies have its good times and bad times. Sometimes its not just societies but the whole planet.
Learn that this is a normal process and it has happened countless of times and it will happen countless more.
From the earliest civilization to the modern day one, not one of them can last through the pressure of time, they all crack.
I personally think we are at a stage that is the end of this saga, and eventually a next one will pop.
>I wonder if a religion has something similar to this.
That's my take on it, just live with it.
