Why do people here like to say that relying on translations is a bad thing? I used to believe this meme too, but now I'm seriously starting to doubt it. Aquinas read Aristotle in translation and look at what he made.

Even then it doesn't really matter because as long as the translation is accurate, you'll know what the poem says. Wagner read Aeschylus in German and look at what he made after he got inspired by a translation. I think there are only a few reasons why you should learn a language to read or study a text, e.g. there is no translation, the translations that exist are really bad, you want to capture the original sound of a poem, you want to understand a text from a linguistic perspective, etc. I really don't get the fuss over translations, even when poetry is in question.
