Need a recc similar to this or east of Eden

I finished this book a few months back, and while I enjoyed it a lot, I feel like a lot of the deeper meanings and themes in the book went over my head. Everything I can find about it says that the Buendia family is meant to be a microcosm of Colombian history, but again, entirely in ways I don't understand, like the house the Buendias live in being representative of the upper class. Can any Colombian/more enlightened anons lend me a hand here.

I'm convinced people just pretend to like this one because everyone else pretends to like it.

I relate with Colonel Aureliano. His success is overshadowed by the fact he didn't win in the end. Also being a sad fuck and failure with women.

Is it supposed to be about an old hooker that causes a tornado?

I can't tell if this is a highly intellectually developed work or if it's just a bunch of goofy stories written with a lot of similar names that names it seem difficult. Could someone tell me if this is a work of the highest intellectual value or if I should look elsewhere?

Is this a mind enriching and worthwhile book?

I'll be honest I did not like this book. The beginning, some of the middle, and the end were pretty good, but the middle just drags on with repetitive characters and things just happen just to happen. A character needs to die even though I've been fleshing him out for ten pages? Fuck your investment he's just killed. During the middle I just read mindlessly because it seemed, as someone aptly put it, that the book is just a well done first draft. All bones.
However, some lines and characters are very good. The first generation, along with the Colonel, are some of my favorite characters, as well as Melquiades. Every other character just seemed repetitious, and I get that's the point, but I would've preferred he substituted original characters for depth instead of shallow copies of in depth characters. I feel like going the Tolstoy route (1000+ pages) was needed here. I also don't like veiled political analogies, so maybe it's a question of taste.


"He had returned from death, because he could not bear the solitude," is still peak lit in my mind, and some of the themes are VERY good, in fact the entire thematic energy is there, but it's soooo obvious and I've seen it done better. I wonder if he had fleshed out his themes through the fantasy aspects it would've been more subtle?

Nevertheless, i'm still gonna attempt Love in the Time of Cholera to see if he handles two main characters for an entire novel better than 10+ characters.

Wow truly revolutionary recommendation from /lit/. This is one of the most boring and uninspiring fiction books I've ever read, the reason it's so popular is probably because people are fucking weirdos and like reading about incest, that's the only reason I can see why people would read this book.
But bravo /lit/, you've really outdone yourself this time.

I like this list. Apart from the absence of Bolaño, it's very good.

What's your favorite generational saga?

Just finished One Hundred Years of Solitude, and I thought it was amazing. Are his other books just as good?
