Nature is very good at minmaxin. That's why you don't have a 2nd heart in your left foot.
In the same case you wouldn't need a useless brain that "only" consumes energy.
The other anon is still a dumbo, because, like you said, more frequent and complex chemical reactions inevitably need more fuel. If those reactions lead to the animal haveing an easier time to aquire that fuel, it pays for itself and nature will automaticall start to grow it, if the surplus of fuel is big enough.

That's why we evolved so fast after harnessing fire. Cooked food is easier to eat and takes less time to eat. More fuel and more time leads to more advancements in other things.

But, what you seem to forget, is, the ability of the brain to transcend it's current form. And this transcending is not uniform.
Without external influences, other than stimuli and sometimes even without external stimuli but just internal (psychosis/autosuggestion) it is able to transform.
So it has to have the ability to initiate chemical reactions, which are not yet possible and thus initates the creation of the fascilitys to make them possible. i.e. learning, change of character and PoV etc. And learning isn't correlated to just giveing you more food, as evidenced by america.

In any case, even if I agree with you that it looks as if we are nothing more than machines operateing with a hardware that is predetermined by physical laws, it's counterproductive to simply dismiss all philosophical questions about that idea.
Simply because we know way to little with our current understanding.
Just like the medieval people thought the brain is just a mucus-generator, we might think the above.
But it's simply not yet proven.
Unless you simply WANT to accept it as another form of DEUS VULT. Which certainly is a comfy position to be in.
