You're coming at it the wrong way. Yes, it's easily read and understood. But if you're writing, that sentence is strange.

Besides, have you seen that sentence in another book? "Probably" won't cut it. There are sentences like that in Ulysses as well but the intention is a bit more obvious. For instance:

The felly harshed against the curbstone: stopped.

like the stupid linguistics example: The horse raced past the barn fell. It's twisted up as a challenge or whatever. Is Pynchon doing the similar stuff? Is every sentence carefully thought out? I know many people think of writing as sitting down and scribbling your talent out, but Joyce definitely didn't take that route.

Just trying to reverse engineer Pynchon's process.
