The first time I read it, I enjoyed the hell out of it. Now that I'm a boomer I found myself greatly irritated at the kindergarten tier humor, like the autistic author thought the only way to humanize his character was make him crack plebbit tier jokes every few moments. So much for the 'gallows humor' promised on the book's cover description.

I bought it at an airport on the recommendation of two co-workers.

I like most things but I did not like this.

Picrelated gives me zero stylistic pleasure, but I have to admit it is a quite captivating and inetersting text to read.

2/3 done. What do you think?

What's /lit/'s opinion on audiobooks?

I work a job where they allow me to listen to music/podcast/audiobooks while I work. Over all I find my retention goes down but I find it worth it if it means I can get through some books while at work/driving.

So is it called "The Martian" because the main character is an extraterrestrial trying to trick his way into human society and all he has for reference is an archive of reddit?

Here's a sample of his random quirkiness:

>You know what? “Kilowatt-hours per sol” is a pain in the ass to say. I’m gonna invent a new scientific unit name. One kilowatt-hour per sol is…it can be anything…um…I suck at this…I’ll call it a “pirate-ninja.”
>All told, the Big Three need 69.2 pirate-ninjas, most of that going to the oxygenator and the atmospheric regulator.
>Conclusion: I don’t need the water reclaimer at all. I’ll drink as needed and dump my waste outdoors. Yeah, that’s right, Mars, I’m gonna piss and shit on you. That’s what you get for trying to kill me all the time.
>There. I saved myself 3.6 pirate-ninjas.

Oh and don't forget to make disco jokes every two pages or the humans might suspect something's up.

This guy has no family apart from the elderly couple he hired to pass the NASA background check, no life apart from refining his autistic sense of humor, and is a complete psychopath. He suffers as much of an emotional breakdown during the 500 days alone on Mars as a guy stuck in an elevator for 2 hours.

I really enjoyed plotline in NASA, how engineers and scientists worked there, their humour and so on.
Any recommendations? I need something about office life, but people should be STEM

I just finished this book in 2-3 days RIGHT AFTER taking 6 months to finish Infinite Jest.

I thought this was kind of fun.

Just finished this. It's about a man stranded on Mars after being left behind by his fellow astronauts when he was presumed dead. It's about him struggling to survive while awaiting rescue and trying to contact Earth.

The writing itself is pretty mediocre, to be honest, but it's a pretty "fun" book and a neat what-if scenario. It's very well researched (at least as far as I, a layman, can tell) and realistic to the actual conditions of the Martian landscape.

Apparently they're turning it into a movie. I'd recommend it if you can bear the amateurish writing for a fun, hard sci-fi story.
