have you literally only read the first 40 pages? the whole point is that he thinks he's a special snowflake, better than everyone but misunderstood, better taste in music and art, the right opinion about war, generally euphoric and he thinks people hate him because they are jelly.

Then he meets the woman who tells him he's just being a winy bitch unable to enjoy the world. He confuses detachment for being superior. So they go on some spacey trip with the saxophonist and this woman and snort some drugs and on the party he comes to understand that he misunderstood the world instead of the other way around.
