You attempt to pursue what is true, and reading is important insofar as it may reveal that which is true to you or lead you astray.

I do not know enough yet. So, when I am forced to make judgements, I am also forced to make them as acts of will which are defended by reason, instead of as expressions of attained truths. I consider myself quite good at anchoring and defending these judgements rationally. But that does not make them any truer, and neither they nor the labour of defending them brings me any closer to it, even if it may convince others. This is a terribly unfortunate state. But, at this point, it cannot be helped.

My judgements belonged all over the place, first resembling the usual social-democrat thoughts, going , then, deeply into republicanism (in the sense of the political community being a moral community, necessary for the proper upbringing of Man, its health being paramount; not in the sense of the American party), then into complete nihilism, then, once again into republicanism, then into left-anarchism, and, finally, now, into the refusal to make any judgements that I am not forced, by necessity, to make, and a republican background when I am forced to make them.
