He's one of those writers you can just dive into man. It doesn't really matter.

I was thinking of starting a reading group for War and Peace over Christmas, cuz I want to reread it, so if you want to wait till that gets going (if it does, people might not be up for it) you'd have some people to ask any questions you might have.

But really, Tolstoy's so great because he is a fantastic top-level novelist, who doesn't requite you to have read the complete works of Plato and Aristotle to understand.

Who is the best translator of Tolstoy? I read Garnetts translation of Anna Karenina, I enjoyed it.
I've heard bad things about the P&V translations in regard to Tolsoy though.

i was fond of the aylmer maude translation of Hadji Murad. is the oxford world's classic War and Peace translation by the maudes superior to the vintage classic by pevear and Larissa volokhonsky?
