You're talking about YA fiction. You can't include something that bad in YA fiction. It happens in serious literature like in The Monk. And yeah, there are probably tons of erotica for women where protagonist becomes a rape slave for some villainous bad boy.

I was not expecting this to be as dark and depressing as it was.

Have any books genuinely scared you? Does horror fiction have any effect on you, or is it just too edgy?

I realize there was no such thing as "horror fiction" in Lewis's time.

Taking a Gothic literature course at the university this fall. Read pic related. And I'm reading Frankenstein right now. On deck is Dr. Jakylle & Mr Hyde followed by Dracula.

So, can we have a discussion on these novels or perhaps a Gothic lit general?

I really started The Monk today. (I'd read ten pages on Monday, but didn't have time to get further til today.) The printing I have is from 1975 and they marketed like a shitty horror novel from that time period. They even put a tag line on the cover: "He signed a contract in blood with the Devil!" Ugh. . .
I should've spend the extra money and got this copy. Still, book seems awesome so far.
