Just finished the Gormenghast trilogy.
The whole thing felt extremely slow and meandered all over the place.
Entire pages could be dedicated to describing a single piece of architecture that a character walks past in five seconds and then never sees again.
Random castle kitchen assistants with no spoken lines have tangents where their entire family lineage is explained and are then forgotten about for the rest of the book.
Random shit happens in a way that makes me feel like the author wrote whatever shit popped into his head that day with zero plan for the overall story. So much shit is repeated and repeated and repeated and the plot moves at the speed of continental drift

I loved it.
The descriptions of people and places were so rich and lush. You can feel the atmosphere of the place and turns what is essentially a soap opera about a small cast of characters living in a fuckhuge castle megastructure into the book equivalent of a juicy glazed Christmas ham.
Can anybody recommend something similar? Something that hits the same vibes?
