This. Nobody knows DFW where I live, it hasn't even been translated into my native language. Pynchon? No. Roth? Maybe... Tao Lin? Lel no. Post-modernism? What the fuck is this. Joyce? Melville? People have heard of them, some have actually read Moby Dick, but most people are rebutted by Joyce's untranslatable gibberish. 1984, Lord of the Flies and BNW are not mandatory high school reads where I live, people who did read them are considered more cultured than average. Loving Shakespeare won't make people call you a try-hard. Actually, apart from a few isolated figures such as Austen, Shakespeare, Dickens or Melville, most known American authors are typically sci-fi or fantasy writers such as Asimov or Herbert. Actually it is firmly believed that one must needs to be Anglo Saxon in order to succeed in the field of fantasy or sci-fi, which is quite ironic seeing how some Americans on /lit/ dismiss that kind of literature as "plebeian".

There's no such thing as Lesbian Studies, African American Studies and all that bullshit in pic related. "Cisscum" or "the patriarchy" are only very distant concepts for me to laugh at because they're never mentioned where I live. There's no such thing as Creative Writing except in very eccentric universities. We hardly write any kind of essay, we compose something that can be roughly translated as a dissertation.

Education is free. Some people are actually paid for studying. I can't relate to that "haha enjoy being forever in debt because you had to loan 300k for your shitty degree" because that just doesn't happen in my country. STEM majors and humanities students don't despise each other and often end up working together. Although both are leaning on the left (the latter more overwhelmingly than the former), we don't have ultra-hardcore-feminist-liberal-commie-edgy (this series of adjectives summing up what Americans think of anything too left-wing) teachers either. And no, Obama is center-right at most.

That thread is bad and you should feel bad for thinking it's a depiction of /sci/. Please stick to your pretentious mind-masturbating sessions and leave us alone.
