So what's your opinion on magic realism, and more specifically if you've 100 years of solitude, how was it?

When did you realize everything put in print isn't necessarily true and that often times historians will put their own spin on their works?

For me it was back in 6th grade when I had to do a report on the history of tanks and I found no one could agree on which nation had the best 1920's tanks, but they all were willing to put forth their opinion as fact.

having said that...

>2 - Middle School
>2.4.7 - The "honking" toilet
> I flush a toilet and just after the water settles down, it gives a "honking" sound. It's a vibration of a medium-low frequency (about 200 Hz and 120 Hz mixed together) and it lasts for about one second. I, quite literally, brought my tape player in to record this sound as I loved it so much. The janitor said that something in the toilet was broken or loose and needed repair. This was one of those floor toilets with a seat and a stall around it. As far as I know, I have no traces of this on tape (and with 50+ tapes to sort though....), but if I hear a related sound, I should almost immediately recognize it.

I was saging another thread and the sage remained in the email field.

You're right, it is full of itself. But it's egotism is historically unsupported because for it's brief and generally irrelevant history. What little history they do have is integrated into popular culture as much as posible to make it seem important, that's why you celebrate the fourth of july and thanksgiving day so intensely.

Everything relating to America's cultural heritage is seen through a mickey-mouse shaped magnifying glass so that everyone can appreciate it without understanding it.

Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World

>Maybe I have not played enough video games, have not read enough cheap fantasy novels to really be able to appreciate Murakamis Hard Boiled Wonderland. I just find it tiresome and void of anything what makes life and literature exciting. I hope his original Japanese writing does not sound as flat and pubescent as it does in the English translation. "Only where there is disillusionment and depression and sorrow does happiness arise, without the despair of loss, there is no hope"(pp 334) - Wow, how deep! Everybody who was as disappointed as me, should read Tanizakis "The Key" to get a kick out of Japanese literature.

Only elitist assholes with a false sense of superiority major in english.

no trolling, this also oddly explains why I've never liked any english teacher except for my high school junior one. she still was, but was in no way passive about it.

>"Who's number one?" might be a trivial game, but it isn't only poets who play it, and since the deaths of Saul Bellow (2005), Norman Mailer (2007) and John Updike (2009) it's a question that's inevitably come up in relation to American fiction. (The Guardian, 18/09/10)

no mention of DFW.

> Implying i'd be impressed

Aww, babby's first allusion.

It's just further proof that even if video games were a medium which could lend itself to the nuances of life, along with the overlapping, complex layers and variety of human thought and emotion, no game developer has shown itself competent in these essential facets of literature. Plot by itself only creates a broad, dry story; the details are what compels readers to characters, histories "Narrative" is thrown around by game writers, developers, and no-name video game critics as if they knew what it encompasses. As for video game "lore", what a crock: it's plot to justify the existence of more plot.

Video game developers: you're out of your element, stick to making puzzle games.

Those aren't Anti-Socialism or Communism you Wanker!

Orwell himself was a socialist!

Those novels are how people can really fuck up a good socialist state if they let their leaders go unchecked. Orwell loved the IDEA of socialism, but hated how Stalin had fucked up the one in Russia. Both of those books are critiques of Puesudo-Communist states, not a true socialist state.
