It's fascinating how this fucking kid lived in Santa Barbara, drove a BMW, was the son of a successful director who worked on the Hunger Games, and had everything anyone could ever want in life. Yet all he could ever think about was getting laid.

Reminds a lot of Jay Gatsby

The Great Gatsby cover is considered a work of stand alone art equal to the novel.

I'm writing an essay on this book, what can I do to really impress my teacher? I'm trying to get laid so I want to write something deep. She's a sucker for things like that and it won't matter how pretentious or pseudo-intellectual like I make myself seem to be. Just give me something profound.

Be me.
Be an alright looking dude.
Be fairly poor going to school with a buttload of rich kids.
Be madly in love with an amazing rich girl for all for years of high school.
She's a sweet down to earth awesome girl even though her family is rich as fuck.
Dream_woman.jpg
Step outside of my comfort zone in order to go to parties where she’ll be.
Drinking_and_smoking_like_mad.jpg
Only see her every once in a while.
See her more often as I go to more parties.
Begin hosting some wild parties
Find out she has a douchey BF
Keep inviting/talking to her
Find out from her good friend that she’s really into me.
She’s really flirty and there is a lot of chemistry.
Go out to a concert with her hugs me constantly for long periods of time and we almost kiss.
Later see her grinding with her boyfriend.
NO_WHY_GOD_WHY?!?!?!?!?!.jpg
Find out from my friend that’s a girl that she isn’t gonna leave her BF and I’m her no. 1 backup.
Last thing I see at concert is her boyfriend’s temporarily dyed green hair bobbing up in crowd like a beacon as I walk away crushed.
Realize I am Jay Gatsby and divert my course before I get my ass shot.

I work in a used bookstore, and I've begun putting quotes about books on the door. My favorite so far is by Terry Pratchett, "A good bookstore is just a genteel black hole that knows how to read."

It's also a buyer of used textbooks, so I put up "Do You Ever Read The Books You Burn" from 451 as well.

What are your favorite book related quotes?

Is this book mostly celebrated for its prose? The plot itself is neat but doesn't seem extraordinary.

ITT: Literary classics you detested.

It's like Fitz was desperately trying to show up the Princetonites with heavy-handed symbolism and characterization.

What do you think of my thesis:

In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gatsby simultaneously defies the past, and strives to relive it. This dissonance is what keeps him from being able to achieve his ambitions because the past is inescapable, yet unattainable.

It really is a fantastic book -- shame that it's considered only high school level reading.

When someone says it's their favorite book do you automatically assume they're one of those people who did 80% of their life's reading in high school? Or do you give them the benefit of the doubt?

Can anybody recommend me some books featuring a kind of character possessing an alluring personality capable of enthralling the minds of the protagonist and other figures with deep admiration (and preferably the reader as well to some degree)?
I'd prefer if this was expressed through the traits of the character itself (e.g. his/her charisma, wit, eloquence, discernment, valor etc.) rather than opportunities given by the story (e.g. this character foresees every action of the protagonist etc.)

I'd rather not look this archetype up on some trope website since I don't fancy the concept of them very much
