they seem more similar than i thought at first, theres the obvious hamlet in each boy, both are quintessential american books, deal with american dream/consumerism and lack of emotional fulfilment from material gain, hal and Gatsby have almost completely opposite character progression, hal becomes innactive and unresponsive while gatsby becomes frenetic and over active towards the end, they both deal with the motif of advertising: the placid eyes of tj eckleberg while in ij this is taken to a grotesque extreme with the advertising that leads to the downfall of tv.
