catholic fag here. I read parts of the catechism for confirmation and while parts are interesting there is also a ton of boring formal stuff that the average layperson will never deal with

Hello /lit/, Catholic here.

I have taken an interest in Protestantism but I am confused about sola gratia.

As I understand it sola gratia is the idea that we achieve salvation merely by the grace of God. This contrasts with Catholic theology where salvation is attained both by the grace of God, and by doing God's work during our lifetime.

This boils down to two conflicting views about Christ's mission. Catholics interpret Jesus's crucifixion as a martyrdom: a call for Christians to be saved by living a holy life in line with Christ's example. Protestants on the other hand interpret it as a sacrifice: we are already saved because Jesus' crucifixion appeased God (essentially Jesus substituted himself for us).

Now I freely admit that I don't see how the Protestant interpretation makes any sense or understand how the belief was arrived at. I was wondering if /lit/ has an opinion about Christ's crucifixion and/or the idea of salvation in general that can help me make sense of it.

Thank you.
