This was touched on in a deleted thread, but I think it's worthy of a discussion. No intelligent person these days would do something as stupid as smoking, but for some reason there are still modern day authors that feel the need to do it to emulate their literary heroes. Personally I will not read any author that smokes currently or has smoked since the 70s. Why would I read the work of someone so intellectually inferior as to subject themself to cancer to be "cool"? Do you read the work of smokers?

>But acceptance of drudgery is the cure
I will run forever. I will drink and snort and smoke and swallow. I will jump on my bike and ride that bastard with drudgery snapping at my rear tyre all the way to the grave. To embrace the mundane is to succumb to the easy, the simple, the path of least resistance. This is a fight for freedom, and that freedom can only be had through reckless rebellion and full synaptic stimulation.

The 9-5 greyscale rat race can never truly be enjoyed. The tedious life can be trivialised away, tolerated and endured, but never embraced. Deep down there will always remain a flicker of that sepia youthful optimism and hedonistic craving. To suppress it isn't a cure. It can never be fully suppressed. Suppressing is the sickness itself.

Hello e/lit/es,
We seem to be getting a lot of requests along the lines of:
>I want to read to XYZ philosopher(ladies love the XYZ), but I don't understand anything and my head hurts. what do I do /lit/?

Which then usually gets the reply:
>study the greeks for 15 years

My question is, is there a road map out there that people could reference to help them get started with Philosophy? Or could we add one to the sticky or wiki? The wiki lists philosophy books but doesn't really give any guidance as in what order to read them. I know its pretty subjective, but I feel like you could have a solid starting point with an introduction to philosophy(to see if thats really what they want to do) and then go on to the greeks and then branch out from there and people could follow whatever path they want to get to where they are trying to go(mostly CoPR).

Discuss your ideas/suggestions for a "read-along" here. I will start up the project if it gains traction by next Saturday.

I did overload "Everything's Amateur" with description. I'm working on cutting that back with my current writing.

So, Literature threads evaporate relatively quickly here, someone had a Hunter S. Thompson biography they thoroughly enjoyed. I'm not sure what it was called. I am hoping that poster will see the picture and comment again.

What does everyone think of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson?
Favorite book? Least favorite book?
The man was incredibly talented.

How many of you claim to be Hunter S. Thompson fans?
How many of you can tell me two other gonzo journalists?
How many of you actually know what gonzo journalism is?

Seriously get a good look at yourself. Grow a soul.

I was just reading this list titled "Top 10 Writers Who Committed Suicide" (http://www.toptenz.net/top-10-suicidal-writers.php)) and now I'm wondering; what are some of the best fiction works which feature characters who go through suicidal thoughts, depression, etc. Not trying to be morbid or anything, it just seems like something that would be compelling to read about.

Today I picked up Fear and Loathing by Hunter S. Thompson. I have already seen the movie and from watching the "making of" stuff it seems like he writes some pretty other awesome books. What should I get into next? The Gonzo Papers or Gonzo Letters series?

tl;dr Hunter S. Thompson thread

post here if you think hunter s. thompson was a faggot

No, I'm not even trolling. So before you little 15 year old pretend intellectuals and "stonerz" go on to say I'm dismissing the father of stream of conscious writing or some shit, I'm going to plainly say that his writing style is lazy, and everything he wrote about was made up lies. Basically he's the literature equivalent of Kid Cudi, unwritten and always falling back on the fact that if he does drugs and is sort of artsy then he MUST be deep. Besides, event though he was a faggot, he's more legit than most his fans.
