What's /lit/'s opinions on ergodic literature?
Pic related is perhaps the most famous example.

I don't get it. It's all exposition and folly. When does it get good, anons who've read it?

Can someone explain the point of this book?
I tried to read it and it just was all over the place. No focus or theme at all.

Finished House of Leaves today. The style was the most interesting part by far. Wish it had more horror but guess that's not really the point of the book. It was an interesting idea at least.

Why did Zampano write the book?
Why did he axe all the Minotaur shit?
What made those claw marks in his apartment?

Looking back after finishing it, House of Leaves felt anticlimactic. I liked the bouncing between narratives but they all just fizzled out disappointingly, aside from the letters.

Kay, long story short, yes, I am normie trash and found this book because of a spoopy youtube series, and was enticed to read it by another. Everyone I've asked who has read this says something to the effect of "Just experience it for yourself."

So I did.

This is a Dadaist work of art, or to put it simply, this is written in such a way that you are meant to try to extract some level of meaning from it, but the book itself all but criticizes you for doing just that. You think it carries some level of meaning simply because of how much there is, and the quirky formatting, and footnotes extending into entire chapters in length from an unreliable narrator who admits in the second fucking chapter that he changed something in the story written by the original author!

This is an endeavor, it's not a work of art, it's just work. It feels like I should be payed to have read this. And I know, okay, I just fucking KNOW that some crackpot on here is going to tell me "No man, you just don't understand" but I understand perfectly. This is counter-culture in physical print, a work that exists to entice the avid reader of abstract and post-modernist works, only to laugh in your face for wasting your time.

Is there anything else like pic related? Or generally, are there other good horror-adjacent novels that delve into the idea of the unknown in such an abstract way? I feel there is such a lack of literature that actually tries to bend your mind like this.

Is this the Infinite Jest of the horror genre?
