Is there a bleaker fantasy series?

The Second Apocalypse impressed me with how depraved and doomed things could get without degenerating into "Everyone is a murdering nihilist or gray-morality mercenary in *this* fantasy universe, this is all brutal and bloody and shit"-shtick or generic grimdark.

Not even halfway through and I've already started skimming. Took me at least 3 books before I started doing that with Malazan. Does this get better? The emo-ness from the characters is annoying as fuck.

The books are actually really enjoyable. I started with the show, which I enjoy, so reading the books I get to read all these subplots and small characters that aren't in there, it's a massive world.

It's put me into a fantasy/sci-fi mood recently, so I'm also going to read pic related soon along with The Book of the New Sun. Anyone got any recs if I enjoy these?

i honestly don't remember most fantasy i read except for really giant stuff (tolkien, gene wolfe, moorcock). in terms of mid-list fantasy, i remember enjoying bakker more than rothfuss.

C'mon, they're genre books. Be realistic, they're not going to be all minimal and highbrow, are they?

Besides, they're not all bad - pic related - though it's true that I do scan Amazon, BD, and eBay to see which version I can get with the least crappy / best cover.

Been looking to get into a new fantasy series. Should I read this one, Gardens of the moon or something else?

I've already read the ASOIAF and LOTR series. I'm open to pretty much anything, difficult or not. I'm not picky or critical at all really.
