He looks like an evil demon therefore he was one. Literature is all humanistic masturbation. The contemplation of God is a much more fulfilling, painful, learned experience.

I'm starting to write a horror novella using my own paranormal experiences and life as much of the basis. I expect it to be publishable.

I know we're on Ulysses now, but I'm going through Portrait now and just came across this line which I had to comment on;
>The rosaries, too, which he said constantly.. transformed themselves into coronals of flowers of such vague unearthly texture that they seemed to him as hueless and odourless as they were nameless
As a Catholic that hit hauntingly close to home. I think it's a wonderful thing to say communal prayers for sick family members, but at times it can really feel like you're just going through the motions. Any other Papist anons feel the same?

It's one of the best parts of the novel. The way he weaves between styles while still keeping a voice is honestly incredible. Melville also plays around with style in Moby Dick, if you're interested.

Didn't know that about Aeolus anon. Interesting stuff.
>cigarette smoke blooming into flowers
Every time I hear an analogy like this it bugs me I didn't think of it first.

already posted in another thread.
learning italian, 3rd language.
can understand 100% of italian movies with italian subs.
can understand 60~90% of italian podcasts (made for natives, not dumbed down ones for learners).
can understand 50~90% of calvino, varying in some parts of the books, but reading in italian right now is a pain in the ass, very slow.
How do I reach high reading fluency? I want to read with a good flow, like I do with english.
Should I just push through this boring period until it I can read properly or are there other approaches to improve this?

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Finnegan's wake. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of metaphysics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Bloom's countious outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Giambattista Vico philosophy, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Finnegan's wake truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Bloom's existencial catchphrase "BREKKEK KEKKEK KEKKEK KEKKEK KOAX KOAX KOAX UALÙ UALÙ UALÙ" which itself is a cryptic reference to Aristophane's greek epic The Frogs. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as James Joyce's genius unfolds itself on their book pages. What fools... how I pity them. And yes by the way, I DO have a James Joyce tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.

Is anyone here an English literature or creative writing major or something relatively related?

I am currently in university (going into my third year shortly) and I am strongly thinking about switching my major to English lit or creative writing. I am planning to apply to law school as well as medical school but if I don't get in there is not much I can do with those degrees. I love to write but would I get published? Probably not.

What do you guys plan to do with your /lit/ tier degree?
