I just finished the first 3 books of the dread empire.
Can't recommend them enough.
It's more coherent in a way than the black company, as it's told more like a traditional story and not just from a single narrator (the annalist pov). Great characters, got romance, shit happens a lot, shit happens you don't expect.
Lots of battles and interesting sorcery and wizards but without convoluted rules for the sorcery constraining everything. Classical wizards that can do all kind of shit.
There's good bromance, tragedy and plot directions you don't expect as you often get enemy PoVs too.
Heroism and betrayals, good military engagements.


Just really good. Looking forward to finishing the rest of the books now.
