Physical degeneration, which often corresponds with that of the spirit (we may recall here in passing the Hermetic notion of 'as above, so below1) was visibly apparent; as expected during this age referred to in the Puranas as the Kali Yuga2. A further sign of this being the grin appearing on the creature's face, smiling and laughter being signs of someone not fully cognizant of the significance of the moment (or the eternal reality, which is really all moments). To fully explore this subject in the present work would be more than suits our present objective, but let it be noted that some schools of Islamic esoterism speak of laughter as being the doorway through which Shayṭān enters the soul (this is to be understood strictly as a matter of symbolism3). The advice concerning the carrots references the central concern of all truly traditional doctrines, namely the bondage of the being and liberation, or Moksha (existing only conditionally, the Self being free in an absolute sense from all limitations and changes), food being the essential element required for the continued existence of the physical body there naturally exist a range of analogies which can be drawn between food and the state of the Being. There is the matter of proper conduct concerning food reflecting the recognition that as a sense object of potential pleasure it is to be treated with indifference by the man striving for liberation, as well as the symbolism of food being that which keeps us within Samsara through sustaining the body and the additional consideration that food is fundamentally non-different from the body, but that the Self which is the ultimate reality is different from both of these; the advice concerning proper food intake essentially being a call to distinguish between the non-real and the real4.

This correspondence being transposable between the various hierarchies of the Being such as between the gross and subtle and so on, so long as one does not make the mistake of applying the correspondence to the Absolute which is beyond all distinctions.

This perspective being common among easterners, a parallel can be found in the foundational basis of the Pure Land tradition, which recognizes that this era is characterized by the increased difficulty it takes for people to understand Dharma.

A similar concept is found in the prophet Muhammad's (pbuh) prohibition of music, the common interpretation being to prevent unwholesome behavior but in esoterism this is understood as eliminating a factor which is a distraction away from Allah (students of Buddhism will recall the demon Mara sent to tempt the Buddha during his sojourn under the Bodhi tree).

From food all beings are born; having been born, they, grow by food. Food is eaten by beings and also it eats them. Therefore, it is called Anna (food). Other than that (soul) made of the essence of food, there is another self within, formed of Prana. - Taittiriya Upanishad 1:25
