Are there any books that deal with religious, spiritual and metaphysical themes, with depressed characters, complex human relations, family issues, etc? Because most of american contemporary lit is just too 'realist', it's only concerned with the material side of things, nobody writes about abstract themes anymore.

I guess Evangelion is one example of what I'm looking for, another could be True Detective. I know Philip K Dick fits my description, but I've read most of his stuff. Anything else?

For anyone on /lit/ who has seen Neon Genesis Evangelion.

What do you think of the story? Do you think its a good as many anime fans praise it to be?
