Why is Confessions your favorite non-fiction book? I've read it a few months ago, and while a few moments were breathtaking (e. g. "Late have I loved you, O Beauty ever ancient and ever new! Late have I loved you! And, behold, you were within me, and I out of myself, and there I searched for you.") and it is was mostly inspiring and interesting, I was a little disappointed given the reputation of the book.
Also do you read non-fiction often I guess?

If I take notes, I generally write some things down on paper, keep it around for a few days and then throw it away. This is mostly to help with memory consolidation rather than a permanent store.
The thing that helps most with self-learning is sexual abstinence. My motivation goes out the window completely the moment I have any sexual release. Even sexual arousal isn't desirable. Abstaining from these things is like being on a low dose CNS stimulant and the mind is elevated to better things.
Rising early like a monk also seems to set the mood for the rest of the day.
