I really enjoyed this book. It's weird it isn't mentioned often when discussing long novels that are essential reading (moby dick, infinite jest, count of monte cristo, etc.)

Holy FUCK. I did not expect this to be this good. I honestly expected Steinbeck to be another schlubby American shitter alla F. Scott Fitzgerald, Sinclair Lewis, Upton Sinclair, Ernest Hemingway (excluding OM&TS). Easily one of the greatest American novelists, comparable in skill to Faulkner, Melville, James, Pynchon (though they're all very different in style). Haven't read Nabokov yet but I'd assume he's also in that set.

What else by Steinbeck should I read? What are his best short stories?

The death of [SPOILER] Samuel Hamilton [\SPOILER] hit me almost as hard as the death of [SPOILER] old Prince Bolkonsky [\SPOILER] in War and Peace.

>it is true that Cal had never looked into his father's eyes before, and it is true that many people never look into their father's eyes. Adam's irises were light blue with dark radial lines leading into the vortices of his pupils. And deep down in each pupil Cal saw his own face reflected, as though two Cals looked out at him.

I wonder what /lit/ thinks of East of Eden. I found it enjoyable but very heavy handed in its themes. but I guess that's why it was Steinbecks best selling novel at the time.

Is this book supposed to get better? I am at the point with the naming of the sons. So far it has been meandering and boring. Cathy’s character is one dimensional as fuck. The only interesting one is Samuel. Does the Cain/Abel parallel turn out to be interesting or is it just boring and gay

This book is so comfy, yet so melancholic. Unforgettable characters. Plus, it was one of my first major red pills about women.

Previous: East of Eden
Amazing book, I will admit this is the oldest book I've ever read seeing as I'm into more contemporary stuff but this was great, a very interesting morality tale with some great characters. Lee will forever be that nigga, I wish I had a friend like him.

Current read: Infinite Jest
I'm only to the first "Chapter", right after Hal gets taken away from the academy. The Foreword makes the book sound like an indictment of Social media and the rigid and distant way we associate with others so I'm very excited to dig into it.

What authors fill you with subtle positivity? I recently completed East of Eden, and amongst Steinbeck's other works it and Cannery Row stand out to me for the bittersweet optimism.
