The spiritual truths preserved by the secret societies and the mystery schools posed a threat to the powers that be. They were kept secret, not only to create a power differential between the initiates and the profane, but also to protect them both. To protect the people from what would happen, if unworthy, immoral people would gain access to powerful knowledge, but also to protect the initiates themselves from the worldly rulers. The Gnostics, the Hermeticists, the neo-platonists, all these traditions were suppressed by the hierarchical church of Rome, which went on to enslave all of Europe, spreading their power structure with the sword, keeping the true teachings of Christ as secret, only accessible in Latin. Those who take on the cross, and bear witness unto the truth, are always hated, and persecuted. The essence of martyrdom is always the same.
