The Stand

Stephen King was the author that got me into books and I think it's safe to say that pic related is his magnum opus.

God. What a horrendous book. 1325 pages for such a shit ending.
If this is supposed to be King's magnum opus then I can't imagine how bad the rest of his books are.

And this is supposed to be King's magnum opus?

Stephen King's magnum opus my ass. This has to be the most boring and unnecessarily long book I've ever read

I'm halfway through and I'm already bored. The story is going nowhere and the characters are boring as fuck
Is IT better?

I'm about to give up on this book. I find it extremely boring
I'm halfway through and so far, aside from the pandemic, nothing has happened related to the main story of the book (the confrontation with the dark man)
Should I go on or am I just wasting my time? Isn't this supposed to be stephen king's magnum opus?

Maybe it's the current situation or I'm too drunk but I just want to say: This is pretty good. King obviously a good understanding of the human psyche and knows how to use metaphors. The characters feel real and the dialogs are good and non cringe. This is way better than your standard mainstream author. I just wanted to let you all know that you shouldn't listen to the shills. Does it have beautiful prose? No, it doesn't. But the characters feel alive and it's entertaining to read. Any other recs? I was thinking about reading his fantasy series after this. Who knows, maybe it will fall off after a while. But so far, I'm really positively surprised.

I've just started reading this book, but my parents are big King fans. I'd happen upon this book from time to time growing up and I was always captivated by this art. The book is thick as fuck and so my imagination would run wild as to what the shit was going on in there.

What are some pulp fiction that have a nostalgic feel for the recent past? Maybe it's just a personal thing, but I read pic related and some of King's other novels when I was a teenager in the 2000's and felt a weird yearning for the 70's and 80's, which was mostly before I was born.

Gather up all you condescending pretentious faggots. Get off your high chairs and take a break from your Dostoevskys and Greek eroticas.

I started reading him when I was very young and I got to secondary school. For some reason my school library had pretty much every book of his, and it was the first stuff I ever read that wasn't YA. Fucking devoured so many of them. So he is stuck in my mind and I'll probably keep reading his books now and then for the rest of my life.

The book I finished was The Stand, supposedly his best, but I actually hated it. Even his fans admit he comes out with complete shit now and then, and if I hadn't known how respected it was I would have assumed it was considered one of them. Not enjoyable at all and left me kinda pissed off.

I've only read the updated version, but it still gives off a distinct late-70s vibe that doesn't work well in a 1990 setting, particularly in the characters, dialogue, some situations, and overall aesthetic, especially Larry Underwood and his music.
