That's the common wisdom, but I've heard a number of novelists suggest that quitting your job is important to making it as a writer. But every time they acknowledge how big a risk it is. The risk is what helps push you to succeed, I suppose. I'm not quitting my job, for the record.

Yes but it's a "handle with care" issue, and rarely do authors handle them with any subtlety or nuance. Like if you wanted to do something on racism, for instance, you shouldn't treat others different from you badly while also realizing that societal hegemony and culture are important.

No I don't have this problem. I note what notice as far as techniques, for example last night I marked a word because I noticed it had a connotation with the end of the opening chapter. But I wouldn't say I'm deconstructing it so hard that I can't enjoy the story. It helps me appreciate the work if anything.
