Well Lovecraft had a story or two that delved into the bayou and the coloreds down there and their voudou
I know he was influenced by a short story called Fishhead but I cannot remember the author’s name. Fishhead was much more sympathetic to the blacks and a couple poor white trash are the bad guys in that one.
Those Across the River was pretty good southern horror. The main story was set during the 1920’s but the backstory went back to before The Civil War.
