The Gentleman Bastards map is awful in my opinion. I'm 3/4ths of the way through book 2 so I'm only familiar with some of it. I don't see how Pirates are much of a problem because it looks to me most of the shipping and trade lanes would be easy to patrol. The entire world is one retarded land mass other than a couple of small islands. The book said that Tel Verrar was the most western point of civilization so I was picturing like a Spanish peninsula and the piracy taking place between like an Africa or some place with colonies and resources. I honestly was imagining everything to be much similar to the Mediterranean or perhaps Atlantic Ocean.
