Religiousity is a pre-Kantian structure of the mind. Read Ernst Cassirer, Language and Myth is an excellent short introduction, then The Philosophy of Symbolic Forms Vol.2.

The actually immersivly understand the religious mindset I reccommend the Anabasis by Xenophon (titled The Persian Expedition in the Penguin edition). I didn't "get" religion until I read that. An entire army takes the knee and sings a prayer when someone sneezes during a speech, because that means the gods have blessed it. No army movements are taken until the auguries have found a positive sign in the entrails of the animals that are sacrificed every morning, the army nearly starves because the signs are bad for days in row and those that defied the augurs and went out looking for food die in an ambush for defying the gods, etc. To the truly religious mind every physcial and mental act is mediated by gods and daemons.
