I personally prefer the Gabler edition but that's just me. If it's your first time you may also want to get something like Don Gifford's Ulysses Annotated. You don't have to check every little thing but sometimes you get a curiosity you just have to satisfy.

I studied Ulysses in college, and we used the Gabler edition. I've since learned the Gabler edition is messed up, and want to read a different edition. So which version should I read?
