Recently read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and came across this line:

"Strange memories on this nervous night in Las Vegas. Five years later? Six? It seems like a lifetime, or at least a Main Era—the kind of peak that never comes again. San Francisco in the middle sixties was a very special time and place to be a part of. Maybe it meant something. Maybe not, in the long run… but no explanation, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that corner of time and the world. Whatever it meant.…"

I recently finished another book that deals with San Francisco in the 60s as well (The White Album by Didion) and have always heard a lot about what a special time the 1960s were in San Francisco (and other areas as well I'm sure). I understand that the era felt very significant for those who experienced it in the right place, but why exactly? Was it the introduction of quality drugs to the area, or just a shared nostalgia of the time? Or, was there really something special about the era that can't be recreated?

My main question for /lit/ is this: if the 60s in SF were really so amazing, is there some place like this today? What I mean is- is there a corner of the world where something truly significant and special is happening? A new cultural wave perhaps?
