The Aubrey-Maturin books are great, but get a little repetitive after the first six entries.
Umberto Eco's stuff is also good.
I read pic related and its sequel recently thanks to an anon's recommendation and liked them both a lot. Don't know about the rest of the series.

I really liked pic related and its sequel, haven't gotten around to reading the other two books yet.

Pic related is reminding me a lot of Porco Rosso, although it's set during WWI and the main character is a submarine captain. I think he might become a pilot in one of the sequels, though.

So you want military fiction? I'm reading pic related right now, it's great. Very well-written, well-researched, and funny too. Would recommend to anyone who likes a good adventure story. The Aubrey-Matruin novels are also fantastic.
