I'm a very picky reader. Not in a good way though, in a way that makes me not read at all sometimes.

The thing is this, and I can't put it in any other way: I like reading NORMAL BOOKS. Not exceptional stories, not books with plot twists and overly exciting plots. No. I want a normal book.

Let me give you an example. I read Infinite Jest. I hated it. Too long and too apocalyptic for my taste. Also DFW rapes vocabulary, in a way that it makes it seem unnatural. I can't even explain it. Same goes for Pynchon.

I also hate epistolary novels because I'm not supposed to be reading someone else's mail (I hate diary books for the same reason).

I can't enjoy fantasy stories either, because I can't connect with the characters enough. The whole fantasy/absurd/non-realistic thing makes me roll my eyes.

What would you recommend to a BITCH like me? I hate to be this selective. I can't sit and read any fucking book anymore, it's becoming unbearable.

Books I really like, for you to have a reference: Moby Dick, The Mysterious Stranger, The Death of Ivan Ilitch, 1984, Crime and Punishment and Karamazov Brothers, Magic Mountain, and greek plays in general (I know there are gods and stuff but they're usually assholes so it's believable).

you're right that /lit/ has always been shitty, I’ve been here since around 2012, and maybe it’s just because I was younger then/am getting more tired of this board now, but I still think it’s gotten really bad in the past year or two years. What you view as cringey references to South Park etc, I view as just being a more innocent time. Maybe I’m wrong and you’re just older and less unbiased than me
