based. i love those accounts from "the other side" on events considered popular in art, like the german short series "Our Mothers, our Fathers", a fresh laceration on a body of ww2 cinema shot mostly from the allies' pov.

picrel should be an extremely grim full doom book on the russian revolution, but not from the bolshevik point of view. the author is considered the most russian among immigrant writers abroad.

i suspect russian names, the way derivatives (casual, cute, etc) are formed can be confusing for foreigners.
most russian novels about war were written in USSR and obviously not always true to life, since they managed to get popular and acclaimed back then. they do a good, sometimes even exagerrated job at portraying the struggles of the russian side, most often without mentioning its shortcomings and crimes.
picrel is a fine outliner, one of the "foreign russian" writers talking about our Civil War. i've only read excerpts and it's kino
