That never would have happened. Not only is defining yourself based on a book kind of a stupid idea, it's also a modern notion that didn't exist before the printing press and that hasn't really been all that popular until the past century. The Abrahamic holy books might be an exception, but obviously an ancient Roman man wouldn't be reading any of those.
