And the concern is not with race here. Islam is a heavily militant religion, spanning all the way back to it's inception with the Prophet Muhammad and the conquests of surrounding tribes.
Now to the question of coexistence; Maybe? The Ottomans tried it and look what happened to it in the 19th century and early 20th century in the Balkans. Even in Bosnia recently the wars and genocides happened on Religious basis, just as much as a racial basis. And in the places where they do "coexist" tensions still are very high. In Central Africa, Boko Haram is known to raid Christian Schools specifically, forcefully converting the students to Islam and either turning the boys into child soldiers and girls into slaves.
Coexistence CAN be achieved. However not anytime soon. It could take entire generations of mediation and reconciliation in order to achieve full, peaceful coexistence.
