>Books about being alone all the time in your room, not having a social circle, not being part of groups, clubs, not going to parties, to school, not working with other people, not participating in society in general

Not technically a book, but this VN is about just that

Picrelated is the name and title screen of my first VN, you get it for free on itch.io. It'll probably be a couple years before I release my current project, since I'm being very meticulous with it. But if you're interested, that's where you'll find it

>The only vns I've enjoyed have been western and short (compared to japanese ones)

You might like picrelated. It's free and only like an hour long anyway

I've made one before (picrelated) and there were multiple goals I had in mind with it. One was to get familiar with working in the medium in preparation for a more serious project I have in mind. And two, was to show how VN's can effectively use ambience to enhance the atmosphere of the story.

Regarding the artistic assets, I had a close friend good with art make the sprites and a couple backgrounds and CGs. For the rest I applied a watercolor filter on photographs. For the music, I intentionally told a story that was itself focused on retro VNs so I could use the music in those games in the background to emphasize the themes I was going for: digital nostalgia and isolation. If you're interested to see this in practice you can find Digital Seclusion for free on itch.io. It is ultimately an amateur work, but the goal of telling a story through ambience I think I mostly got right.

For my next work I'm planning to hire some artists and composers to help. But where possible, I'm looking through royalty free music to use (there is more out there than you might assume). Most money will likely go into art, but that also depends on the art style you go for.

I really want to see more aspiring writers consider VNs as an option, as the medium has lots of technical potential to effectively tell stories. It's just unfortunate that for now most of that potential is getting wasted on smut.

Idk about non-fiction, but recently I read this VN about a hikikomori. It does a pretty good job of getting you inside his head, so if you're interested in the psychological aspect of somebody actively rejecting the outside world, you might appreciate it. Picrelated

This VN is about a guy who embraces a rejection of reality

>most western vns are so ironic and try to subvert so much you have to ask why people even make and read them if they hate vns so much

I made a VN that was literally a love letter to the medium, but it didn't get popular at all. I hate VNs like DDLC, where it is clear the Dev has nothing but contempt for the medium. I genuinely love this medium, and would like to see it reach its potential (visuals + audio + prose based narrative is a great combination when people know what to do with it).

Picrelated is my VN for those curious

I made a visual novel about this in connection to waifuism. The main character is literally a shut-in NEET. Just google picrelated, its up on Itch.io

For fiction that touches on this topic a bit (specifically the waifu angle of it), picrelated might interest you

Unironically my visual novel: Digital Seclusion (picrelated).

I don't like self-promoting, but I've been involved and fascinated with waifuism for ~10years now so it's not a subject I'm ignorant of. It started in my early teens when I got into anime and began browsing Tohno-chan, an obscure image board where people took the concept of waifus way too seriously. And this infected my own impressionable mind as well for around a year. Eventually I permanently left that community, but I never forgot about it. The delusions of escapism were essentially a twisted form of spiritualism there. Waifuism is closely tied to being isolated and spending most of your time on a screen immersed in anime, games, VNs. Not just as a form of entertainment (or it may start that way), but eventually it becomes the only solution to counter the loneliness of utter isolation and lack of real substantial relationships in real life. Again, I did my best to express this in my VN, so if anyone is curious about a work of fiction that tackles this stuff, consider checking it out. You can find it on Itch.io.
