>Why is it always recommended you read lotr/the hobbit before the works that show the history of the world before lotr takes place?
Because the recommendation is made thinking that the recipient is a YA who will grow along with the work instead of a mid-20s Millenial who is looking to fill the void in their personality with anything at all.
In a less biting tone, once the hobbits are clear of Tom Bombadil, and to a lesser extent Rivendell, the story proceeds on a less fanciful arc.

You could of course read the Silmarillion at will but it's dry and encyclopedic by comparison. Gandalf and the hobbits add a human dimension where the Silmarillion reads more like Norse mythology combined with Biblical genealogy.

I'll roll the dice with "The Company". I love "Clarges" after all, which is hardly a universal opinion. "Blue and Gold" will be my fallback position.
I'm not a big fan of short stories so I'll skip them for now.

Thank you for the thoughtful recommendations!
