C.L. Moore wrote a sword wielding warrior woman in the Jirel Of Joiry short stories for Weird Tales in the 1930s, without merely making her a big titted Conan. Jirel is a capable fighter but not superhuman; instead, other and more feminine qualities are emphasized. Dogged determination, ingenuity, and the vengeful will to overcome a male captor/villain (no woman scorned etc.) The stories tend to be formulaic but the characterisation is never corny or overwrought or overly compensating; admitting differences in gender and exploring possibilities within them.
