bought the book where it's from and it was 50/50. some good stuff, some pretty bad.

It's not dead. I don't live in an english speaking country, but generally I think it's best to start with some sort of an anthology. I'm reading one right now and I noticed that it's very good to read about the poet, see some reviews and analyses, to put him in context, call attention to some aspects that I didn't notice by myself, see which stylistic movement they are a part of, etc. In school they didn't teach us how to read modern poetry, it's often complicated, abstract, experimental, prosaic or hyper-erudite, I had to adapt and improve my ways of reading quite a lot to grasp it.
Garbage like Rupi Kaur and slam poetry is merely the tip of the iceberg, there's a lot of worthwhile English poetry beyond it. Pic related.
